Masterhead Drafting

To come up with the master head for my magazine I decided that I needed to brainstorm some ideas. I started to think ‘what do you think of , when you think of the rock and indie music genre’. The reason why I decided to say this was because I want people to see my master head and instantly understand what my magazine is about. Here are some of the ideas that I came up with. Once I had that rough foundation. I started to develop those primary ideas. This idea of R&I is good because it clearly represents Rock and Indie music. The bad thing is that its quite simple.
The idea of ‘Loud, Amplified, Music’ is good because its original and interesting. However it doesn't make it clear this is a rock and indie magazine.

The further idea of the previous idea has been added to ‘rebellious’. I like ‘Loud, rebellious, amplified music’ because it has a punk/rock feel to it. I dislike it because it seems too long to be a master head. Overall I personally feel that R&I is the best option for a master head because although its simple, its still represents the indie and rock genre. This is also similar to the master head of NME magazine which is one of our competitors. However I still like the idea of ‘Loud, Rebellious, Amplified Music’. I may use this use later on as a slogan.

Organsisation of Costume & Props

Because I wanted the artists which was featured on the front cover to represent the kind of music that my magazine is about I wanted to make sure that her costume reflected the artist and the magazine.

The main piece of this outfit is the black leather jacket. A black leather jacket represents a rough biker chic and will make the artists look tough and stylish as well. I chose for her to wear a lace detailing dark purple slip dress, which represents the artists' girly side. Because the look of the leather jacket, the boots and the rosary look so masculine I wanted to contrast that with a feminine piece. This is why I choose this dress because its feminine enough to make her look softer, however it still fits in with the ‘rocker chic’ feel to this costume. The rosary necklace maybe seen as controversial because it plays on the idea of religion but here I have just decided to use it because it goes well with the outfit and gives the idea that she is tough and going against religion. Because you wouldn't expect someone religious to be hard and edgy, instead you would expect them to seem good and cheerful. This could be seen as quite controversial.

In contrast to the rosary I chose for her to wear a black bangle which has diamantes in them which are in the shape of a peace sign. By having her wear this bangle it makes her seem hippy and makes her also seem like she is a friendly person. It makes the audience think she’s a friendly person because when you think of peace you think of happiness and friendliness with everyone. This will make her seem more relatable to the audience.

For her shoes I chose for her to wear a pair of military boots. This adds to the roughness of the whole look, the boots look as if they have been scuffed and worn which makes it seem like these boots are very old and cheap. By making it seem as if she’s wearing rough stuff, it makes it seem as if she’s quite down to earth and doesn't care about the expensive superficial things. This will again make her seem more relatable to the reader. On her legs I chose for her to wear black tights. I chose these because it creates a great silhouette of her legs against the white background and make her legs stand out. The denier of the tights also makes sure that you can still see her legs and makes he legs look more attractive. This will appeal to the male audiences. Overall I think that this costume conveys all of these ideas and will make my music magazine look modern and a ‘rock and indie’ style.

I decided that I wasn't going to use any props for this shoot because I think that the main focus should definitely be on the artist and just her. This will reflect the article on the double page spread that will be featured.

To take the pictures I’m going to use the Panasonic DMC-FX01 camera. I decided to sue this particular camera because you can control red-eye, flash and zoom on this camera. This will help me prevent any of the standard problems that may occur when I’m editing.

Organisation of the Location

My magazine shoot is going to be a photo shoot of a popular music artist. The main feature is the artist in this shoot; therefore I wanted to make sure that my set was simple and clean cut. I decided to have my set just a plain white background, this is used in many other artists shoots.

]The white background I used, was one of my walls in my bedroom. I used a wall because there is direct sunlight from my window that hits the wall and highlights it.

This is a picture of my wall before it was set-up for the shoot.

I removed the items from the wall and I also placed a black cloth on the floor to hide my carpet. The reason why I choose a black is because it contrasts with the white wall and also the colour black is a stereotypical rock style colour which fits in with the idea of the shoot. The white background also means that it’s easier to play around with the font styles of master heads and also the white means that I can edit things with more ease.

This is the overall set-up for the shoot.

Personal learning and reflective evaluation of the research process and its outcomes

Before I could start looking at the planning for production or anything else I carried out various tasks which helped me gather the research I needed to make my magazine suitable for my audience and also help me understand the magazine industry.
Front Page/Contents Page/Double Page Evaluation
By analysing all of theses elements of magazines it helped me break away each piece of material and understand the connotations of the magazine idea. It gave me inspiration and ideas also to create my own ideas, and helped me see how all of these little components help create one large image for the reader. It also helped me see that everything on the page is used/put there for a reason. Whether the reason was the represent ideas or to create an atmosphere the magazines manipulate the audiences mind to guide it to the idea they’re trying to portray. I will think of all of these ideas when I’m planning for my magazine.
Audience Questioner Evaluation
I carried this piece of research out to help me understand my target group more and help me understand how to give them what they want. It’s important that you understand your audience and know what they want because that’s what will help your magazines sell. Target audiences will buy the magazine if there’s something in there that they want or are interested in. This is obvious because it’s pointless making a music magazine for teenagers then offering a free cookery pot, because that’s not what a teenager would buy a magazine for. From this task of research it’s helped me understand my audience and know what they would want out of a music magazine. I will constantly be thinking of what will appeal to my audience when planning for my magazine.
Flat Planning Evaluation
From carrying this research out it helped me understand how a music magazine is set out and organised. Many advertisements were used in both magazines which helped me realise that a lot of magazines are every dependant on advertisements to keep the company running because company’s pay a lot to magazines for advertisement spots. The flat planning of the two magazines showed me a variety of the layouts in both magazines and showed me the differences in the two different genres of music magazine. Because one magazine had an indie music genre and the other a R&B genre it gave me a variation of layouts to look at and to see how they different they lay out their magazines. Overall I’m going to think about the flat planning of these magazines when I’m flat planning for my magazine.
Find Your Tribe
I took this quiz as part of my research to find out what it took to be a certain ‘tribe’. From taking this quiz it helped me realise the different things it took to be of a tribe. From this quiz it helped me understand my audience and understand what they want and they don’t want. I will think of the tribes and the different choices when I’m planning for my magazine.
Magazine Institutions
I researched the different magazine institutions to help me understand the world of magazines. From the information I found out, it helped me understand the different magazine company’s and how their business works. This has helped me personally because now in feel like I fully understand the magazine institution buisness.

Overall Evaluation
From all of the research that I have carried out I have overall learnt that what and how you feature things in your magazine can affect the audience’s opinions and overall feel to your magazine. I learnt that it’s always important to give the audience what they want in order for your magazine to sale. I’m going to think of all of these elements when planning and designing my magazine.

Research into Magazine Institutions

IPC Media Music magazines are dedicated to music and music cultures featuring many different famous musicians, but also new musicians that specialize in certain types of music. In the majority the music magazines focus on one genre although as well they do focus on the closest other music to this genre which they also include features, up and coming and profiles on artists. For example if they choose Rihanna she could be represented in a pop or an R&B magazine so she would span across two different genres. Also each of the different genres of music attracts certain types of audiences. The magazines need to relate to the target audience and this also relates to the whole content and style of the magazine as well. It might as well have an age difference for their audience from Teenagers through to mid-twenties and also by gender so this is often a very difficult for magazines to appeal to their entire readership with exactly what they want to appear and feature within the publications. More and more the music magazines are featured heavily on-line and through different digital and social media channels as well, as their target audience are now choosing multi-media channels to access information.

The four main magazine institutions are: BBC - Emap – IPC Media - Bauer

IPC Media

IPC Media is one of the leading of both consumer magazine and digital publishers in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1963 as International Publishing Company and currently produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK adults –their websites collectively reach over 14 million users every month.IPC is owned by Time Inc, the publishing company of Time Warner Inc.
The company has many sub-brands within their portfolio such as: IPC Media Connect, Market Force, Southbank, Ignite, and TX.
The iconic music magazine brand that IPC Media is well known for is New Musical Express (NME) which was first published in March 1952 and will be celebrating 50 years in the music industry in 2012. It was the very first British paper to include a singles chart. Their genre is advertised as rock which would therefore attract a wide audience of both mixed age, gender and target groups such as rockers, punks, and new age groups. The types of musicians they include are Kings of Leon, The Killers, Arcade Fire and Artic Monkeys. NME has become a truly unique multi-platform media proposition. Across the magazine, nme.com, NMETV, NME Radio and the brand's live events and awards, NME reaches over one million music fans every week. NME is the longest published and most respected music weekly in the world. Every week it gives its readers the most exciting, most authoritative coverage of the very best in contemporary music, including award winning features, the latest releases, live reviews, the definitive guide to the best new bands in its Radar section, as well as a regular look back through the magazine's incredible 58 year heritage.

BBC
BBC magazine is the magazine publishing arm of the BBC worldwide. BBC provides a varied and wide range of magazines that target many different audiences. They focus their magazines on music, gardening, children’s popular TV programmes, cooking, cars and astrology.
The music magazines that the BBC has published include:
Its Hot - Top of The Pops - Classical Music Magazine
The BBC publishes many different genres of magazines as well as major websites through their digital channels as well. There are only a few magazines that are of the same genre. Top of the Pops attracts age ranges from 11 up to 15 years due to the content, music articles such as ‘Glee’ and ‘X Factor’. TOTP – affectionately known was launched in February 1995 and is released in magazine style monthly, but now has a new website which is updated every day with new ‘Today’s News’ section and new features. The magazine concentrates on chart music and features and focuses more on the commercial groups. It was closely linked to the TV show ‘Top of The Pops’ which was all about the music that was currently in the charts and everyone who is into the chart music and that culture. The magazine and the website also feature interactive articles and competitions to win musical related prizes, posters and pop memorabilia of star personas.
Emap
Emap specializes predominately in the ‘b2b’ (business to business) publishing space. It has specific publications for each genre and in general these are quite different and contain specific content relating to an industry such as nursing, retail and media. This attracts a very wide audience which is attracted through magazines and on-line versions including rss feeds on breaking news within the industry publications.
Emap was established and founded in 1947 and has its Headquarters near Camden in London. The name Emap originates from East Midland Allied Press.

Smash Hits is Emap’s music magazine. It is primarily focused on pop music, and aimed at children and younger teenagers as its content is a mixture of very young pop musical groups, personas as well as content which isn’t of a mature nature. It was published in the United Kingdom by Emap and ran from 1978 to 2006 and was bi-weekly. It featured pop music artists, gossip and fashion that attracted young girls who liked listening to current music. Smash Hits and Top of the Pops were rival magazines trying to compete for higher market share at the same defined audience.

Bauer
ThroughBauer Publishing Group own Bauer Media its publishing company;it is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group. The Bauer Publishing Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 230 magazines in 15 countries. They also feature heavily online, TV and a wide range of radio stations.

Bauer Media is a multi-media platform UK based media group. The group consists of many sub-brands and companies mainly around two groups – Magazines and Radio – this is widely recognised and being innovative and industry leaders, which is reflected in many awards and accolades they have won within the industry.

On average over 12.4 million people listen to a Bauer media radio station. It owns the number one and four top commercial radio stations in London. Kiss is one of their prestigious radio stations which attracts and is targeted at the young dance audience.

The music magazines that they publish are Kerrang – this name is a word of onomat opoeia as it is represented to sound like a power chord on an electric guitar. The other publication they also publish is Mojo Magazine, which is also a multi-channel publication.
The research that I have carried out has helped me underdstand the different magazine constutuions and also understand how magazine isntitutuions function.

Audience Research Mood Board and Media Pack

Mood Board This mood board is a collection of images which I put together myself. These images represent the most popular answers from my audience questionaire. This moodbaord will be a help guide to me when I'm creating my magazine, because it will help me remind myself what is in the audiences best intrests. These images also represent other elements, such as the image of the broken piggy bank represents the fact that many people don't want to spend alot of money on magazines and music. Also the images of the certain bands represent the Indie music genre, this helps me because indie msuic is the genre of music that is most popular with alot of people my age.

‘Find Your Tribe’ Analysis

Find Your Tribe
I recently took the find your tribe quiz and from the answers of the questioned that I answered they calculated that I’m a Indie Scenester. To find this out they asked me questions from what’s in my bag to which brands I like and dislike. They also asked me basic questions such as age, employment status and gender. The end page (the screenshot is below) tells you what ‘tribe’ you are and has a rough summary of what an Indie Scenester is. At the bottom of the page it asks if you agree that your tribe is and Indie Scenester.
I partly agree this because I love going to gigs and I also love Indie music however I mostly buy fashion magazines and don’t really ever buy NME magazine so that’s the part I don’t agree with.
Overall I like this website quiz because it shows you how even the slightest changes in someone’s opinion can change what type of group or ‘Tribe’ they fit into.

This issue of NME magazine is a special collectors issue which main feature is ‘100 gigs you should have been at’. Because this is the main feature, this one article takes up a majority of the pages. By having the issue a collectors issue may make the reader have more reasons to buy it because it makes them think that this issue is a one off special issue. There are around about 10 advertisements featured in this magazine, which I would not have noticed whilst looking through the magazine as a reader, but because I was looking through each page I noticed how frequent the advertisements are. All of the advertisements used are all relevant to the genre of this magazine; the advertisements are mostly for gigs, festivals and artists which have the indie music genre. This shows that the magazine is a hotspot for artists and music venue’s to host PR because they know that is what their target audience is reading.

This magazine is the latest issue of the American magazine VIBE. I thought that the NME magazine had a lot of adverts, but compared to this magazine that magazine had hardly any. This magazine had 36 advertisements in total which is more than double of the amount NME had. However in NME the advertisements were relevant to the audience type which are reading the magazine and were mostly music related. However in this magazine the advertisements are completely random, they range from Alcohol advertisement and make-up advertisements. This shows how many companies know how popular this magazine is; therefore they want to showcase their products even if they don’t have anything to do with music. Instead of this magazine focusing on one feature artist for the whole of the magazine, they focus on many different artists. By focusing on many artists instead of one it makes the magazine more versatile because of a magazine is focused on one artist and the reader may not like that particular artist, but if they have a variety they may be interested in someone else in the magazine.

Audience Research Questionnaire Results Analysed

I recently carried out a audience questionnaire which helped me find out information that i needed to know to help me plan what I’m going to put in my magazine.
The main piece of information that I found out from this questionnaire is that the main genre that most people liked was the Indie Genre. I found this out in the question about genre, 3 people said they’re favourite is indie and although 3 people also said that R & B is their favourite genre. However because NME magazine was the most popular music magazine that people bought that meant that more people are interested in the Indie genre. From these results I have decided that my magazine will be around the indie music genre.
Another thing I found out was that many people don’t like to spend money on magazines and music. I found this out because although the majority of the people that I asked are employed, they still don’t want to spend their money where it’s not necessary. So in my magazine I will make my first issue a special discounted price and put money off coupons in each magazine for the next issue. This will help encourage the reader to buy the next issue. I will also feature some sources to where the reader can get free music downloads; this will also encourage the reader to buy the magazine.
I also found out the majority of teenagers spend most of their time whilst their at home on the internet. The most visited website by teenagers is Facebook so I’m going to put that the magazine has a Facebook page, this will promote the magazine more and make the magazine look cooler to the readers.
Many of the people I asked said that they would buy the magazine if they got free gig tickets, and I asked what festivals they would be attending this year. From these results i have decided that I will feature discount codes to many of the festivals that the readers are going to because they are expensive and many people would be interested in buying a magazine if they could get a discount code.
From these results it’s helped me a lot by seeing what will help me boost magazine sales and also give what the reader wants. I will defiantly consider these points when I’m planning my magazine.

Audience Questionaire Results

I asked 10 male and female people between the ages of 16-21 to take my questionaire. I put my results into pie charts to make it seem clearer for myself to see the differences.

From these results is shows that most people buy the music magazine NME. The reason maybe that they enjoy the music that NME offers or other elements of the magazine. These results show that the majority of the people i asked said they don't spend much money on magazines. This maybe because they either buy one issue a month so it doesn't add up to that much per month, or they may not wish to spend their money on magazines.
These results show that the most popular genre's of music are indie and R&B. These two genre's are very popular and most mainstream music has elements of both genre's in them which is why it makes them so popular. This shows that the majority of teenagers these days download music illegally, part of this maybe because they don't have enough money to spend on music or that they don't want to spend money on what they can get for free.
From the people that can downlaod legally they still don't spend that much money on music anyway. This shows how teenagers aren't intrested in spending their money on music.
These results show that 100% of the teenagers had an apple product, this shows that this particular brand is popular and maybe a good way to have pr through it.
These results reinforce the evidence from earlier that the thing that teenagers would be most intrested in is getting free music. The other top pick was discount codes which reinforces the same idea also.
These results show that most teenagers are spending the majority of there time online rather than watching TV, I think this is due to social networks and other websites which have made teenagers more keen to go online.
These results show that the most popular site is facebook and the least popular is myspace. These results show that when teenagers do watch TV there favourite channels are the music channels and the comedy channels. This shows that teenagers like to be entertained.

These final set of results shows the popularity of some of this years top music festivals, by asking this question it helps me find out what promotions may intrest my target audience.

With all of these results I will later talk about what I've learnt from my research and how this will help me understand my target audiences intrests.

Research: Detailed analysis of music magazine double spread (a variety of music genres)

This double spread from ‘vibe’ music magazine is of the celebrity Florence welsh who is part of the famous band Florence and the Machine. This magazine cover represents her as a edgy and attractive woman. Her costume represents this because all the clothes she ]’s wearing are black and made from leather. When you think of black leather you think of toughness, and by having her wear this represents her as a tough character. The colour black also contrasts against her red hair which makes her hair stand out against the black colours. Not many props have been used in this photo shoot, I mainly think this is done to keep the main focus on the artist. Florence is sitting on a box which has been covered in a red and white striped sheet which looks very similar to the American flag. This fits in with the text which is in the background which says ‘USA’ because it gives an all over American feel to the shoot. This makes the reader think that this article is about the artist and America.
The headline of this spread is the words ‘got the love’, these words are part of one of their lyrics from one of their songs. This will seem familiar to the audience and also relate to them. The headline is in an formal italic style which stands out against the rest of the text on the page and makes it clear that this is the headline.
Overall I like this spread because its simple and edgy which highlights the artist and is also eye catching.

This double page spread is on a feature on the celebrity singer Lily Allen. The headline of this article is a quote from the interview with Lily Allen, by having this as the headline it gives the reader a sneak peak to the real interview. The font and style of the words are as if someone had cut out the letters out individually as they look like different sizes and are in all different positions. This makes the article look more alternative and makes the quote stand out of the page. The headline Lily talks about her being an ‘attention seeker’, they made the font of this headline around that particular quote, the bold writing does this because it attracts attention.
The image of the singer is a mid-long shot of her leaning forward to the camera with her hand on her hips, this pose looks awkward and different which fits ion the rest of this spread. She is wearing a scruffy red checked shirt with messy hair and make-up. This makes her look grudge and alternative. The colour red is a bold colour and is the only colour used on this spread which highlights her.
Overall this spread is very bold and in your face, this is good because it will attract the readers eye while they flick through the magazine.

This spread from ‘Q’ magazine is of the very popular singer Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is seen to have a crazy and different personality which is reflective in some elements of this spread. The set-up is simple on the left side is the image of the singer and on the other side is the article about the artist.
The image of Lady Gaga is a mid-shot of her body from the bust up. In this image she is wearing nothing on her tops except a chain necklace. This can be seen as controversial because some people may not think it is appropriate to have her have a photo shoot that's so revealing and other may think that this is artistic. Also by having her covering certain areas with her hands and the necklace gives her a sexual image and an attraction, this will appeal to the male audiences. Her make-up is glamorous and creates shadows on her eyes and cheekbones, this makes her look more attractive. Her hair in this shoot is very big and voluminous, almost wild d which reflects the artists personality and music. This photo ahs been edited during production to black and white which makes the image look classic and dramatic, because black and white represents images in the 60’s with movie stars and celebrity’s such as marlin Monroe. This plants the idea that lady gaga is classic and will be around for a long time.
On the right side of the article the letter ‘L’ in red has been out onto the text. This ‘l’ represents lady gaga, by having this letter on the text represents that the text is about her which should attract the audience more. In the top right corner the words ‘lady gaga’ have been printed in medium size writing which indicates who this article is about. The word ‘lady’ is in a lady-like style writing which reflects the true meaning of the word ‘lady’. The word ‘gaga’ is in all upper case writing and is in a bold font as well, this represents the word well because the word ‘gaga’ is a weird and bold word.
Overall i like this spread because its looks classical and eye catching.

This double page spread is on the artist Pink, who is a famous pop singer. The spread has an easy set-up which is split into two separate section. On the left hand side is the actual article about Pink and then on the right side is the image of pink.
The image of the artist Pink makes her look like a very happy and easy to get on with woman. In this picture she is wearing bright yellow earrings, the colour yellow represents brightness and when you think of brightness you think happiness. You get this impression because of her facial expression and the way the image is et-up. The image of Pink is a close up of her face and abit of her neck. This makes the audience feel like their seeing all of Pink because when your closer to people you often see more flaws on them. By doing this it makes it seem as if she’s comfortable with the reader. Also by having her smiling makes her seem relatable to the reader and makes her seem as if she could be someone that you could have fun with and doesn't take things to seriously. I think the overall idea of this photo is that Pink is a happy person and that they wanted the audience to relate to her.
The left side of the article is set-up into three columns which makes it clearer for the audience to read and understand. The heading ‘Pink’ is in a neutral colour which surprisingly doesn't represent the meaning of Pink. This gives the impression that she is a neutral person.
Overall i like this spread because it gives the reader something to relate to and has a easy set-up.

This double page spread is on the band ‘traffic’ and it i think that it has a country feel to the whole magazine. The main image of the band takes up 3/4 of the page and is an image of the band in a field. I t is a low level shot of the band coming of out some trees , by having the band coming out of the tree’s makes them look mysterious and alternative. The band are all wearing neutral earth tone colours which matches with the theme of the country for this shoot.
The header matches also with the picture because the header is about people getting together in the country, that is exactly what the band are doing in this image. The font and style of the words are in a rustic style writing which makes it look more country like. I think by having the whole theme of this magazine may suggest to the reader that this band is a country music style band. The background for the article part is an earthy beige colour which makes it look older and more authentic.
The writing which is used in the article is a pink colour which contrast to the earth tone colours of the background. However to highlight the bands name the word ‘traffic’ is in bold black writing which tells the reader that this is the bands name. The bands name ‘Traffic’ is also featured at the top of the page in a black box and the words traffic is in white writing. By doing this again it shows the reader that this article is about this band.
Overall i like this spread because its very original compared to the over spreads because it looks very naturalistic and looks like its from a former time.

This double page spread featured in NME magazine is of the band the teenagers. The image mainly dominates this page and the text takes up a small proportion of the spread. The image of the three teenagers is a laid back image and it looks as if someone has taken the picture unprofessionally. This makes it more relatable to the reader because it makes them think that these boys are normal. The set looks like a typical teenage boys room with pictures of girls, bands and more. This makes them seem more normal again and also goes with the idea that the band is called ‘teenagers’.
For the header and other elements of the spread the colour blue has been used. I think the colour blue was used because the colour blue often represents boy and the colour pink represents girl. This makes the spread very gender specific. The part of the text is set into two sections which makes it easier for the reader to read.
The header ‘the teenagers’ is set against a blue background and is in all uppercase black writing. This makes the words more bold and indicate to the audience the name of the band. Overall i like this spread because it does a good job of representing the artist.

Research: Detailed analysis of music magazine front cover (a variety of music genres)

This classical music magazine cover is designed to draw in the audience who are interested in classical music from around the world. The image of the Chinese woman holding a violin represents musicians from around the globe and gives the impression to the audience that classical music is a global thing. Next to the images there is a bold and large words that say 'Sarah Chang’. Although it does not state it on the magazine, but this immediately indicates to the audience that that is the girls name on the cover. This is interesting because its something that the audience presumes without the magazine saying ‘this girl on the cover is Sarah Chang. The pink clothing on them woman represents femininity and by having an attractive woman on the cover also shows the audience the attractive side of classical music. The words’ FREE CD’ is put in a bold yellow circle by the title of the magazine to attract the audiences attention to what the magazine has to offer for the audience. Also by having the words in capital letters and it a bold font, it makes it stand out to the audience and make it seem urgent to get this magazine before they miss the chance of getting this free CD. This magazine attracts mature people who are interested in reading about classical music.

This popular rock music magazine cover is designed around the main image of the popular music artist. The image of the artist ‘Mia’ attracts the audience who may know who she is, and if they don't the image still draws the reader in. In the image she’s wearing what looks like is a union jack style top, which represents that she is a British artist. The way her hair is messily styled, the cigarette are all indications that she is not a stereotypical girly girl and has a slight rough edge to her. She’s also seen as a confident woman, this is done by wearing the red lipstick because red represents sexiness and also the fact that she has direct eye contact with the audience, it makes the audience think that she is a confident and attractive girl, which draws the audience in. This fits in with the rock them style of this magazine. The word ‘Mia’ next to the image represents that this is what the artists name is without telling the audience. By having the word ‘Mia’ main feature is ‘Mia’. The background which Mia is in is a very neutral background which again makes her stand out to the audience. Also on the front cover there isn't much text, this mainly focuses the attention on the image and points out that she is the main feature. I think that this magazine would attract the younger audience who may like the artist Mia and also who may like indie/rock music.

The magazine company Billboard is targeting there younger audience with this magazine cover of Miley Cyrus. The image on this cover is a friendly, inviting and fresh image. Many people may be used to seeing the more glamorous side of this celebrity, so this image may show a new side to her. The setting around her is a naturalistic image of her in a field makes her seem like a normal human and shows that she isn't so glamorous. The clothes The guitar around her body represents that she is a musician as well as a singer. The lighting is this is bright and makes this image seem very welcoming and happy, which allures the audience in. The master head of this magazine is a white colour and has bright colourful infill's on certain letters. This is done to make the master head look bold and colourful without changing the whole master head. The font is bold and large and is edited to be under the image of Miley Cyrus, this makes her seem more important and also shows how she’s the main feature of the magazine. I think young people may pick this magazine up, because it looks like an idyllic image for teenagers to be.

This magazine cover is a very simple cover, but however also has a very powerful image. The image on the cover is a edited image of a popular music artist breaking the ground. By having the image of him breaking the ground gives the image that he’s a tough man. More indications to this representation is that he has tattoo’s, spiky hair and a mega phone. This shows that he is loud, tough and powerful. By having as edited image of the ground splitting in half beneath him shows that maybe he is too much to handle and gives the audience the image that he is powerful. The mastered is an inverted white ‘Q’ on a bold red background. This makes the ‘Q’ stand out. However the image of the artist has been edited to be put over the master head, this may seem like he’s taking over this magazine cover, because he’s so powerful. The lead article is in the centre of the cover, and is in the only article to be shown on the front cover. The title suggest the name of the artist, and by having it in bold grey writing it represent toughness, which is what the image is also representing. I think that people younger people may buy this magazine because its tough and they may also be interested in the artist on the cover.

This magazine cover for this guitar magazine goes against the typical guitar magazine. The reason why it goes against the conventions of a typical guitar magazine is because it has an image of an attractive women holding a guitar, instead of just a guitar. By having the girl holding the guitar makes the guitar seem nicer and also makes the audience think that if they buy this guitar they may get a women like this. The women is wearing pink lingerie and has blonde hair, this is a typical woman stereotype and represents the female gender typically. The women has eye contact with the reader and makes it seem alluring. The master head is a large and bold black style writing. This makes it look more masculine compared to the female image on the cover. The image on edited over the master head, which makes the women look more important. The Cover line’s are also bold and colourful against the neutral white background. This makes them stand out and highlight the features in the magazine to the audience. The cover line ‘the girls next door’ is edited to represent the female gender. The words 'the girls’ is in a swift, swirly style to represent females because that is a girly font. This then contrasts with the words ‘next door’ which are in a bold and large font, by doing this is makes in seem more interesting and stand out from the other cover lines which have all the same font. This shows that this is one of the main features in the magazine. I think mainly men would buy this magazine because it has the male appeal to it.

This magazine is designed around the younger female audience. This magazine of top of the pops you can tell is designed and made for younger female audiences because of the celebrities used and the fonts. The celebrities on the cover used are either popular female singers or attractive younger celebrities. One of the images is a picture of a boy band which are not wearing any tops, and also the image has pink hearts around them. This suggests that this boy band is attractive and dreamlike to the female audience. The colour of the font represents the female gender because it is pink and the colour pink represents the female gender. The master head of ‘top of the pop’s’ is a edgy and modern font and is pink with a white outline. The white outline contrasts against the pink and gives it a bubble like effect which represents that this is a pop magazine. When you think of pop you may think of a bubble, which is why this may represent the pop genre. The main image of the female celebrity is edited on top of the master head which makes it seem as if she’s dominate. Think they have done this to represent the quote on the cover which says ‘how I beat the bullies’ this shows that she is strong which is exactly what the image shows. The celebrity looks pretty and I think she can be seen as a role model to the younger audience. The logo of the BBC is used in the top left corner of the magazine to show who published this magazine. A bar code is also displayed on the bottom left of the magazine to use when the people are buying the magazine.

Research: Detailed analysis of music magazine front covers (a variety of music genres)

On this contents page they have decided to alure the reader in with music celebrity pictures with house styles introducing articles. By having pictures of celebrities when they’re out and about, makes it seem as if they are seeing the celebrities exclusively and secretly.
Wham magazine has featured an editors magazine at the top left of the contents page. This is used in many magazines and is a typical format used in contents pages. In the letter he makes the reader think that he and the team have worked so hard to produce this one monthly magazine ‘in this months issue we have worked hard to get you the latest information on all the latest-’ by saying this it makes the reader feel as if its money well spent and also that they have got all the information they would want on celebrity gossip and latest music. At the end of the letter he talks about how the readers should subscribe to the magazine to save 25% on gigs and concerts. By using an offer it makes the reader think that they would be saving a massive amount of money. Also by having this offer inserted into the editor magazine, it makes it seem as if its just a friend mentioning it to you and not an editor of a popular music magazine. By having an editor letter makes it seem more personal and also by having the handwritten signature, makes it seem personal to the reader.
The house style is a very bold style. This is done to go with the name of the magazine ‘wham’. Because the word ‘wham’ is meant to be a bold word the house style is based around that, using bold contrasting colours such as black, yellow and pink. By using bold colours it makes sure that everything stands out, make it look more exciting and also represent the magazine name ‘wham’. At the bottom of this contents page is a preview of one of the articles featured in the magazine. The small preview of the article acts as a teaser to the audience, to show them what's inside which entices them. The small headline for that article is in all higher case and is in a bold black font. This style of font represents the article itself, because when something is in all caps it makes it look more important and controlling, which is exactly what the article is about.
This Kerrang contents page is set up to be clear to the audience about what is in this magazine. The main colours are black and yellow which a bold contrasting colours. By using these two colours it makes it stand out against each other which represents the genre rock because when you think of the genre rock you think loud, bold and hard. The genre rock music needs to be represented in this magazine because that is what the magazine is about. To help show that this is a rock magazine various rock artists on the contents page to show what will be featured and represent the rock genre. The overall set up is clear and simple to help make the audience see where everything is in the magazine. Each page is under a subheading so when the audience want to look at a specific part of the magazine they can go to the contents page find the subheading and go directly to the article they want by page number. In the top corner of the magazine is a letter from the editor. The letter from the editor is seen is many magazines and makes the audience feel as if they are being welcomed into the magazine personally by the editor. In the bottom right corner is an offer on subscribing to ‘Kerrang’. This is in a orange box with white writing style. The orange box compliments the white background of this contents page and the colour orange doesn't fit into the colour scheme of yellow and black, therefore looks like it is not part of the contents of this magazine.

This contents page has a original style because most contents pages in magazine follow the same format. The format is usually a clear and small images of things that will be featured in the magazine. However in this magazine one large image of a celebrity is used and then the text is on the side of her. The image dominates the contents page and makes the celebrity the main focus of this magazine. The font of the words is modern style of font. The word contents is in a large, bold and white writing which is spread downwards, this is done because it leads the readers eyes to the sub headings of the contents. The subheadings ‘Features’ and ‘Fashion’ is done in a different style. The style of these two headings looks feminine and elegant. These two headings contrasts against the bold, modern font of the word ‘contents’, which makes it look more interesting to the reader. The image of the celebrity represents them as being very elegant and glamorous. She is represented as this because she is wearing high heels, expensive jewellery and has glamorous make-up and hair. By having her legs on show it makes her seem more attractive as well to the audience and also creates more of an interesting shape for the audience. The background of this image has an fading effect, it starts off as a black and then faded down to light grey, this created a gradient effect and highlights the female celebrity in the light part of the background. The colours of the background are neutral which match the female’s clothing. This simple layout focus the attention on the celebrity and makes it easy for the reader to get to the magazine pages.
This contents page is similar to the one above in the fact that the main focus in this contents page is the celebrity Katy Perry. The image of the celebrity holding the blow up mushroom is a very bold image. Its bold because her positioning looks robotic and the blow up mushroom looks like something strange to have in a contents page. This represents the celebrity as being a bold and interesting character. Also by having this image in the contents page shows how she is the main feature of this magazine. The word contents is in a bold and sharp font this represents the image below also because its all very modern and robotic and doesn't look natural. The listing of the pages is on the right hand side of the page in small writing which makes sure that the main focus is on the image. Although the writing is small it still is easy to read and clear to the reader. All of the writing on this page is in a black colour except from the word ‘features’ which is in a bold pink colour. This is done to highlight that specific word which highlights the features that is special to this particular edition. The colour pink represents femininity and by having it as quite a bold pink represents a bold woman, which is exactly what they are representing Katy Perry as. I like this style of contents page because its very bold, however I think that in a contents page the listings of the pages should be the main priority.

This contents page is split into two sections. On the left hand side of the page it has the billboard chart list which shows what songs are in the charts that week. Then on the right hand side of the page is the normal contents page which tells the reader the pages and features the magazine.
To make sure that the reader can differentiate the two sections they have designs each section to be in contrast to one another so they don't look like they are part of the same thing. The chats part of the page is in dark colours such as black, grey and white. The second part is in bright colours such as blue, white and black. This differentiates the sections to the reader and makes it easier for the reader to understand. The contents page has 4 images in total. Three images at the top of the page and then one in the middle of the page. The three images at the top indicate the features that the magazine have especially, by having g the images there its easier to go to the image then to the page then looking through a list of words to find the particular feature. The middle image is the image that was on the front cover, this then helps the reader go straight to the feature o the front if that's the reason why they bought the magazine.
Overall I like this set-up of the magazine because its easy for the reader to jump to the pages they want to see without having to look through a list of words.

This contents page for a classical magazine has a classical feel to it. The background of this magazine is a deep rich red colour which is different to many of the other contents pages that I have analysed. The deep red represents richness which is what you think when you think classical music, the colour is also quite a classic colour which will never be outdated. The white lettering is used to stand out against the red colour, the white and the red compliment each other in a soft way. The font of the words also represents that overall idea that this is a classical music magazine. The font is a traditional style which looks like its very classic. The set-up of this contents page is very simple and easy to read for the reader. The advertisement on the side of the page shows how this magazine is in a partnership with this particular music site. By having this in their contents page represents that this company is important to them and deserves recognition. The only image used (apart from the advertisement) is of a more mature woman. This picture represents that she will be featured in this magazine. Next to the image is two small yellow arrows that point to the image and the number eight. This shows to the audience that this is where you can read about this woman. The image represents the woman as a attractive mature lady, and having her wear an elegant black dress shows that she is an elegant lady. Overall I think this contents page is good because it represents clearly the idea that this is a classical magazine.

Personal learning and evaluation of school/college magazine

Things I’ve learnt: College Magazine Front Cover
I learnt that in most of the college magazines that the students are always represented as respectable, happy and well groomed pupils. However this is just a stereotype because everyone knows that not all students are like this. The reason why the college magazines do this is because it gives the general impression and image that the college is a friendly and happy place to be. In my college magazine front cover made sure that I went against the typical stereotype that the students are very well behaved by having an image of a student drinking. This went against the original conventions of a college magazine and made it seem more honest for the students. I’ve also learnt from the research that most fonts used on the front cover are bold and easy to read, I’m going to incorporate this into my front cover and also in my contents page. I learnt that when I’m planning the costume for my models that they are plain not pattered clothes because I found it hard in this task to fit the style and font of my writing to the background because of the models costume.

I’ve also learnt the Typical Features:
•Logo
•Masthead
•Bar code
•Issue number
•Main image
•Strap line
With all of these things that I have learnt I will incorporate them into my preliminary college, magazine front cover.

College Magazine Contents page
Although I do think that my contents page has a simple structure to it I’ve learnt that when I do the main task to find a way to make the contents page look interesting and clear for the audience to read. To make the contents page more interesting I may use more images as many of the college magazines used at least 3 images on the contents page and also a plain colour. This will make the magazine seem more stylish but yet also have that simple structure for the reader. I also learnt that the main reason to have a contents page is to make it easy for the reader to find where the pages are that they are looking for; I think I did this well by making my contents page have an easy to follow structure.

I also learnt the Typical Features:
•Three images of top stories/headlines
•Regulars & Special features sub-headings
•Page numbers
•Letter from the editor
•Easy-to-follow structure

With all of these things that I’ve learnt I will make sure I co-operate them into my final task.

Preliminary Task Research & Planning: Research into College Contents Pages

To help me understand the full layout of college magazine contents pages I researched college magazine contents pages on the internet. Below is three different contents pages of college magazines and I analysed each one of the features that they have.
This contents page has a very clear set-up and shows a brief introductory to what is inside of this college magazine. 3 main images dominate this contents page. The top right image is of the college ground itself and it looks like stylish learning environment which would appeal to the students. The image below it is of the image which was used on the front cover of this magazine, this directs the reader to where they can see the feature which is on the front cover. The last image is an image of the pupils in their PE kit, all together and laughing. This represents the students as having fun at the college together in unity. This gives a friendly image to the college and makes it seem as if everyone gets along with each other. The actually listing for the contents are all in a clear black font which is contrasted against the white background. This makes the writing clear and readable for the audience, which helps them direct them straight to the pages they may want to skip to without there being any confusion.
Overall I think this contents page is very clear and readable, it represents the college and students well in a friendly and inviting way.

This college magazine contents page mainly represents the schools sports, The three images used in the contents page are action shots of the school basket ball team. These action shots show the team playing and makes them seem like a really good basketball team. By having just these images on the contents page shows the reader that sports is the main focus of this college. In the top right corner of the magazine is small size writing which indicates the issue of this particular magazine. This is good for the reader if maybe if they look back on when they bought this magazine they can know what season and which year. The main master head ‘contents’ is in a large black font which stands out against the white background. The list of contents is in black and blue coloured writing which differentiates the categories to the actual pages.
The colours black, blue and white are the colours of the basketballs uniform which you can see in the images. This shows that the whole magazine is about the basketball team. Overall this magazine has a clear set-up and represents the college as a basketball orientated college.

This contents page has a very stylish and modern feel to it. The colour scheme creamy green represents freshness and gives the whole contents page a more modern look because the colour green is quite a youthful colour. The three image in the centre of the page represents one of the students from this college. The images are taken against a plain white background and the costume she is wearing are relaxed and sophisticated. The fits well with the contents page because it looks relaxed yet sophisticated. By havi9ng all three images overlap each other is makes it seem more artistic and again more relaxed. The image at the bottom of the page of the apple and toast is put there to intrigue the reader to see how to make this snack. They make the snack look delicious by having the colours look richer than they are and also have the P.O.V of the camera as if were looking down on it before eating it. The font of the word contents is in a upper case font and has a dark, thin blue line underneath it which contrasts against the writing. The two green panels separate the two sections of the magazine and makes it more clear for the audience to get to the pages they need to get to.
Overall I really like the design of this contents page because it is structured but also at the same time relaxed.
