Preliminary

Evaluation of Preliminary
When coming up with ideas of my magazine cover I researched into other magazines which students may be interested in buying and what appeals to them about those magazines to make them want to buy them. When I designed my Henley College magazine for students I made sure that I thought about what would appeal to the audience and what would interest them.
The main image on the page is an image which I found on the internet of a college student drinking some spirits. I used this image from the internet before I got the final image from the photshoot. I decided to do this because it then helped me vision what the image would look like against my design of the magazine and also so that I didn't do the photoshoot, get the image and then realise that i didn't think it suited it. I decided to use this particular image because it could be seen as being rather humorous to the students however cannot be seen as humorous to the parents to the students. The image either way will attract the audience and make them want to pick up this magazine to see what the image is about, whether it would be the students or maybe even the parents of the students. This image would stand out against conventional College magazines because it is not a happy school environment picture, but it’s the opposite which will be original compared to other magazines.
Above the image of the student the words ‘working hard?’ is written, this title is seen as sarcastic against the photo because the student obviously in that photo is not working hard as students should be when they are revising for exams. This creates a humorous effect for the audience. The letter style makes it seem formal which represents work and also the colour red suggests stress which is obviously not what the student is going through on this picture. This creates a dramatic contrast for the audience, therefore making them want to see why this is.
I made sure that the rest of the text and headlines around this image fitted in with the same colour scheme as the image. However I did make sure that on specific words I changed the lettering style or colour to highlight them to the reader. For example where it says ‘keep warm and fashionable this winter’ I made the word warm red to represent warmness in contrast to the cool blue words and also the word fashionable pink to represent fashion, which is seen in many magazine to represent also the female gender. These words stood out against the words and made the title look more interesting. Another example is when I had the word ‘partying’ in a bright yellow colour next to the red words, I did this so it would stand out and also when you think of the colour yellow you think happy, bold and loud. This represents the word partying and highlights its importance in this particular article inside the magazine. On the bottom right hand corner of the magazine I decided to write ‘All this and more inside...’ I decided to do this because it is right next to where you would flick open the magazine and makes the audience want to open the magazine. Also by having the word ‘more’ in italics it highlights the fact that all of these features are in the magazine and more. This makes the audience want to know what more could be in this magazine. On the right is my final preliminary Magazine front cover because the image i have used now is a photo that i recently took just for this task. The way the picture is set-up is different to the orginial one, therefore i had to rearrange the headings to make sure they could stand out in the best way possible. I think in my main task i will make sure that my model(s) wear plain clothing which will be easy to cover with writing without the words getting lost on the background.
In the contents page I wanted to make it clean and simple for the audience to read, I wanted to do this because it makes it easier for the reader to see what is in this magazine when it is easily laid out. I have seen this format being used in many other magazines when I did my research and I think they did because it’s such an easy and simple structure for the audience to read. The plain white background creates a dramatic contrast to the busy colourful layout of the front cover, which gets the reader ready for the contents of this magazine. I had the categories of the articles in the magazine in red because this made the reader differentiate every section and also the red stood out against the neutral white background. The lettering style and font of the word ‘contents’ is a large and clean cut font which stands out very clearly against the background, immediately indicating to the reader that this is the contents page.
I found out when I did my research on magazines that although the picture has to draw the audience, the text always has to stand out and also grab the reader. I did this by using colours that stand out against loud background and still look bold against the image on the screen. I have also learnt how to make images bigger without them looking stretched or distorted. I did this by choosing a large image which had to be sized down instead of small images that had to be made bigger. This made the image on my front cover clearer to the audience. The image of the student drinking was quite a bright and bold image and when I put the text front of it the text would just be fading in the background, so to change this I learnt how to use to brightness and contrast tool on publisher. This helped me make the image abit darker and therefore making the text stand out more. This made all of the elements of the magazine stand out.
The research that I collected help me make decisions on what style lettering to have and what images, all to make sure that the audience would pick up my magazine over other ones. I think that my magazine attracts the students and also parents in different way which will challenge their opinions on the articles discussed in this magazine.
